Preventative Tooth Care
Maintaining good oral health begins with the preventative service we offer, such as teeth cleaning, Visilite oral cancer screening, and sealants.
Teeth Cleaning for Adults
Patients see one of our two highly qualified hygienists for a polish of teeth, removal of buildup and stains. An oral cancer exam is done and any issues with the teeth and gums are addressed alongside Dr. Van Guilder.
Teeth Cleaning for Children
It is recommended by both the American Dental Association and the Academy of General Dentistry that children be seen within 6 months of their first tooth or by 12 months of age. We provide a safe and non threatening environment for a first dental visit.
X-rays and Radiographs
We utilize a digital x-ray machine that uses less radiation and can be seen by the patient on a monitor in real time for a better understanding of their overall oral health.
Visilite Oral Cancer Screening
This is in addition to our standard visual oral cancer exam. A rinse flags cells that are abnormal when viewed under a special light. It is recommended for those at risk for oral cancer such as those with a history of cancer, a family history of oral cancer, those who smoke or drink heavily, and those with HPV.
Sealants
Sealants are resins that fill in the grooves of the permanent teeth to help prevent cavities. They are usually done once the permanent molars erupt, around age 6 and 12. The sealants that we place on teeth are touched up for life as needed.
Fluoride Treatments
It is recommended that children receive fluoride when they are at risk for cavities or have had cavities in the past. We place fluoride varnish, which is more effective and stays on the teeth longer than the more traditional foam in tray method. This varnish method also makes it possible for children to eat and drink immediately after application.
Scaling and Root Planing
This is for patients with periodontal disease, also known as a ‘deep cleaning’.
